A call for help, Nepal disaster prayer and relief request.
Letter from Nepal
As you may have heard on the news the largest earthquake in 80 years has hit Nepal, Katmandu and many remote villages. Reports keep coming in of more lives lost, over 2000 now. People being made homeless, panicking, no where to go, water and food shortages, communications down in many places. Hundreds of Tents and tarps needed for immediate temporary shelter. Tarps and plastic sheeting can be bought locally where available. The immediate response has been rescue operations, helping the injured get to hospital, people are in need of blankets water and food. One of the Y teams has been in the centre of Katmandu helping distribute food. the weather here is cool and wet.
Communications have been very difficult on the ground. Phone lines out and internet mostly down.
Dilli and Nar our leaders in Katmandu with Kelly helping in communications have been liaising with organisations in the city working out how to best respond. All our staff are okay many sleeping outside as after shocks continue. The latest one was a 6.8 at about 1pm local time.
We are creating a central fund so that teams can begin to form and reach out to the city and also to the remoter areas. They will also be looking to a longer term relief action plan after the immediate emergencies are taken care of. We have about 170+ staff in the city.
